In 1943, successful toymaker Samuel Mullins created his very first porcelain doll, which he intended to give to his daughter, Annabelle Mullins, nicknamed "Bee." One day, on their way home from church, as Samuel and his wife, Esther, pulled over to fix a tire, Bee ran into the road and died when she was struck by a passing car. Out of grief, the Mullins prayed for anything to bring their daughter back. As a result, they unknowingly summoned a demon, posing as Bee's spirit. The demon then asked permission to transfer its essence into one of Samuel's porcelain dolls, using it as a temporary vessel. Initially, the Mullins were overjoyed to see their daughter, but eventually realized they had been deceived by an evil spirit seeking a human soul. Shortly afterward, Annabelle attacked Esther and gouged out her left eye. The Mullins then take Annabelle and lock her in Bee's closet, covering the walls with Bible pages, before contacting the church to bless the household.
